BMP180/ GY-68 Digital Barometric Pressure and Temperature Sensor

Previous 19 / 47 Next

BMP-180 is a highly popular, low-cost digital barometric pressure and temperature sensor manufactured by Bosch Sensortec. Because atmospheric pressure changes predictably with height, it is widely utilized as an altimeter in hobbyist electronics, robotics, and mobile devices. It serves as a fully functional, smaller upgrade to the older BMP085 sensor and utilizes the exact same software libraries.

Key Specifications
  • Pressure Range: 300 to 1100 hPa (+9000m to -500m relating to sea level)
  • Temperature Range: 0°C to 65°C operational range
  • Interface: Standard \(I^{2}C\) serial communication
  • Operating Voltage: 1.8V to 3.6V (Breakout modules like the GY-68 often include a 3.3V regulator making them 5V compliant)
  • Low Power Draw: Consumes as little as 3 \(\mu \)A depending on the resolution mode.
  • Precision: Absolute accuracy down to 0.03 hPa.

Standard Breakout Pinout
Most hobbyist modules feature 4 to 5 pins:
  1. VCC / VIN: Power input (Connect to 3.3V or 5V depending on module specs).
  2. GND: Ground connection.
  3. SCL: \(I^{2}C\) Clock line.
  4. SDA: \(I^{2}C\) Data line.
Standard Arduino Connection Guide
To test the sensor with an Arduino board (e.g., Uno or Nano), follow these quick wiring steps:
  • VCC \(\rightarrow \) Arduino 5V or 3.3V
  • GND \(\rightarrow \) Arduino GND
  • SCL \(\rightarrow \) Arduino Pin A5 (or dedicated SCL pin)
  • SDA \(\rightarrow \) Arduino Pin A4 (or dedicated SDA pin)
